Oregon Coast travelogue spanning the course of one day exploring Devils Kitchen in the afternoon and Face Rock in time for sunset. This is a special place. The shoreline of Bandon is one of the most beautiful spots on the Oregon Coast. It features a rugged coastline with seastacks and volcanic rock formations along the beaches and just offshore among the waves. This is a favorite spot among photographers and is a great place to conduct a sunset timelapse. All should consider themselves lucky who get to spend time in the area. The awe-inspiring beauty is sure to leave an impression upon the soul. There is an American Indian legend about this spot. Some say they hear a maiden's voice on the wind, and standing on the cliff overlooking the ocean you can easily pick out the face on Face Rock. There is a well-kept trail to the beach, and several rocky intertidal areas to explore at low tide. More than 300 species of birds frequent the area. The viewpoint's name is derived from the off-shore rock island which has the likeness of a human face and is part of a Native American legend. The state acquired land over time for the 15-acre (6 ha) park, originally called Bandon Ocean Wayside. The initial land was a gift in 1934; the state bought additional acreage in 1961.
