📍Avery Farm Nature Preserve - Ledyard / Groton, Connecticut Welcome to my series where I highlight some of Connecticut’s lesser known parks and preserves. Don’t stay inside this winter! These are easy walks that you can explore in the colder months. This is Avery Farm Nature Preserve. Spanning 305-acres in Groton and Ledyard, this historic farmland offers miles of trails through fields, forest and marshland. The property also features glacial erratics and plenty of opportunities for bird-watching. As someone who was born and raised in New England, I find walking along paths lined with stone walls so nostalgic. I grew up in the town of Stonington, not far from the Avery Farm Nature Preserve. If you’re familiar with the area, you might recognize the Avery name. The family has deep roots in the region dating back to Colonial America. Some Avery’s fought and died in the bloody Battle of Groton Heights.
