The Trail Most People Never Finish

My son Devyn and I took our Jeeps into a canyon in southern Utah that most people drive right past. At the end of the trail — a hidden waterfall on LaVerkin Creek. But the falls were just the beginning. We explored the ghost town of Grafton, the abandoned silver mines of Silver Reef, camped on a cliff overlooking the canyon, and uncovered the history of the pioneers and Paiute who called this place home long before us. We camp on an overlook above the falls, cook steaks over one pan, and wake up early enough to have the entire waterfall to ourselves the next morning. After the trail, we grab lunch at the Stage Coach Grille in LaVerkin, then head to Grafton — one of the best-preserved ghost towns in Utah, founded in 1859 as part of the Mormon Cotton Mission. You might recognize it from the bicycle scene in Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (1969). We walk through the remaining buildings, the cemetery, and the stories of the families who tried to make it work here. Our final stop is Silver Reef — a boomtown built on something geologists said was impossible: silver in sandstone. At its peak in the late 1870s, over 1,500 people lived here.
