15 Years of Prepping: Here's What I Got Wrong

After 15 years of preparedness, my views have evolved beyond just gear and apocalyptic scenarios. This video reflects on how my understanding of a prepper mindset has changed, moving past initial assumptions about what emergency preparedness truly entails. I break down the biggest mindset shifts I’ve had over the years — from overemphasizing bugging out and long-term collapse scenarios to neglecting practical areas like water, knowledge, and everyday preparedness. I talk about why most emergencies are far more likely to be storms, job loss, inflation, power outages, or temporary shortages rather than a total societal collapse. That's not to say preparing for larger-scale disasters is pointless; those events can still happen, and having contingency plans matters. But I’ve learned that realistic preparedness should first focus on the disruptions people are actually most likely to face close to home. Over the years, I’ve realized real preparedness is usually less tactical, less dramatic, and a lot more practical than I originally thought. Hopefully this video helps newer preppers avoid some of the same mistakes I made and encourages more experienced preppers to reflect on how their own views may have changed over time.
