We broke camp and headed deeper into the St. Joe River canyon, chasing that perfect, off-grid campsite. But what we found instead was miles of wildfire devastation from 2025—and snow still blocking the higher elevations. The further we went, the rougher it got… and it quickly turned into the most dangerous road we’ve ever been on. Between the burn scar, unstable terrain, and sketchy conditions, we knew it was time to turn around. So we made our way back down and returned to the same riverside spot from the night before—and honestly, it didn’t feel like settling at all. This place was too good to pass up. We set up camp with our Toyota Tacoma and Kali King rooftop tent, soaked in the warm 70-degree weather, and spent some time fly fishing (even if it wasn’t exactly the right season). Dinner was simple and perfect—chicken quesadillas—followed by a laid-back night around the propane fire pit under a sky full of stars, listening to Sasquatch Chronicles. The next morning, we packed up early and started the long 8-hour drive home, wrapping up a trip that didn’t go as planned—but turned out unforgettable anyway.
