More Info: After waiting nearly 1 month since Kīlauea volcano's last eruptive episode, the well anticipated Episode 44 lava fountaining began at 11:10 a.m. HST on April 9, 2026, and ended at 7:41 p.m. HST after 8.5 hours of continuous lava fountaining. Due to the Tephra Fallout from West winds which affected the Uekahuna and KMC areas, park officials quickly closed Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park. Highway 11 between mile markers 24 and 40 near Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park were also closed just before 12pm and reopened later that evening around 6:45pm. Precursory activity (South vent lava overflows) began on April 3rd, 2026, nearly 1 week before Episode 44 occurred.
