The idea was that this would be perfect training for a summer with some big mountain bike stage races coming up. When we came up with this idea a few weeks ago, it sounded like great fun – but then, at last week’s gravel event, I got absolutely wrecked. And it was entirely my own fault, for allowing a series of setbacks to distract me from the important things – like fueling and hydration. After a week spent mostly lying on the couch eating bland food, what was supposed to be a fun challenge is looking more like a really dumb idea. But you never know until you go. And now it’s go time.
