The Future of The Birders Show

It’s been a while since our last update, and we wanted to sit down with all of you, our community, to talk honestly about where The Birders Show has been, how it started, and where we hope it can go next. In this conversation, Diego Calderón and The Birders Show producer Gregg Bleakney share the untold backstory behind the show: how it was born during the pandemic in Bogotá, filmed from apartments during lockdown, and slowly evolved into something much bigger than either of us imagined. We also open up about the difficult challenges behind the scenes after the shutdown of major international tourism programs that helped support our production team and finance the show and why the future of The Birders Show now depends on finding a more sustainable path forward. Then something unexpected happened. Anderson Cooper and the team from 60 Minutes discovered The Birders Show and reached out to collaborate on a story about birding in Colombia. More than 10 million people watched the episode, helping introduce a global audience to the magic of birding, conservation, and the incredible people behind this community. Now we’re asking ourselves: How do we keep this alive? Could birding travel experiences and conservation-focused tours help support future episodes?
