When inshore fishing for redfish, snook, trout, flounder, and other inshore species, we recommend having a leader that is about 24-30 inches, maybe even starting around 36" to give yourself a little more line so you can retie in case of chaffing from rocks, fish, docks, oysters, etc. Then retie a new leader when you get down to about 18 inches. If you start with a 12-18" leader, you aren't giving yourself room to retie, and you're probably missing some fish. As for knots, we like the FG knot for braid to leader. For your lures or hooks, it really depends on what you're using and the situation, but good options are a non-slip loop knot, uni knot, or palomar. What's your leader setup look like?
