The Buzz About Bees in Alaska + Our Biggest Honey Harvest Yet

Bees in Alaska? Keeping Honeybees in a notoriously cold climate may sound foreign but folks all over the state have been raising bees successfully for decades. Honeybees are primarily shipped to the 49th state in the early spring months when there is still snow on the ground. Growing the colony, watching for swarms and harvesting honey is only a portion of caring for your bees. The ultimate goal for many small-scale beekeepers in Alaska is to keep their bees over the harshest winter months, a feat not easily achieved. Strong colonies undoubtedly can repopulate much more quickly than hives that are shipped and installed year after year. We take a tour of Mike, Dawn & Jimmy's hives kept at the Harlow Family Farm, Georgeson Botanical Garden and the Fairbanks Community Garden. In addition we harvest our honey from the girls and start the Fumidil- B treatment, feeding and winter preparation process.
