California’s Most Famous Mining Town ⛏️🛘👻

Discover Calico Ghost Town, a true Old West silver mining town nestled in the heart of the Mojave Desert. Just two hours from Los Angeles. It’s on the way from Southern California to Las Vegas. ⛏️ Founded in 1881, Calico quickly boomed at its peak. It was home to over 500 mines and a population of 1,200 residents, complete with saloons, hotels, and a thriving Chinese community. Millions of dollars in silver and borate minerals were extracted from these hills before the silver crash of 1896 sent the town into decline. By the early 1900s, Calico had been nearly abandoned. 🏜️ In the 1950s, Walter Knott (of Knott’s Berry Farm) bought the town and lovingly restored its original buildings, later donating it to San Bernardino County in 1966. It has since been preserved as a regional park. 🤠 Today, you can wander historic shops and restaurants, ride the Calico Odessa Railroad, explore Maggie Mine on a self-guided tour, get spooked at the Mystery Shack, try your luck at Gold Panning Adventure, and enjoy seasonal events that bring the Old West back to life. 🚂 Note: Due to the historic nature of the site, not all areas are ADA accessible.
