34 miles and 11 thousand feet of climbing and every step involved some form of hiking, skinning, skiing or weeping. And if you happen to over exert yourself like I did you can throw in some puking for good measure. There's a reason I put this mountain off for so long. I did attempt it 6 years ago with Christof but we got turned around by the slow disintegration of what once was the Sitkum Glacier trail. The problem with skiing Glacier Peak is that it's hard to get a sense for the snow conditions from 700 miles away. However, Jon (A Washington local) did tell me that it would be ready to ski 2 weeks. I'm pretty sure he nailed those dates because my attempt was marred by searing temperature and unconsolidated snow. I saw six other people on the mountain and all but one looked absolutely miserable. One of them got really close to giving me a lecture about attempting a single day solo push in the conditions we were currently experiencing. In the end he just paused for an awkward amount of time after I told him it was just me and that yes I was going to do it in a day. His conversational silence did give me some concerns as I put on my skis and headed off into the untamed wilderness of Glacier Peak.
