How One Student Turned Loss Into Lifesaving Action on Campus

In this video, learn how one student transformed personal loss into lifesaving action to help create a safer, more prepared campus community at Western University. Emphasized throughout is the importance of public intervention and AED use during a cardiac arrest, which can increase one’s chance of survival up to 80%. After losing her father, Steven Jelich, to sudden cardiac arrest, Danijela Jelich led an initiative to improve cardiac arrest awareness, CPR education, and public AED access across campus. With support from her community through a Crowdfunding campaign, Western University, Campus Special Constables Service, and Action First Aid, the university now has a protected, publicly accessible outdoor AED available 24/7 at the University Community Centre. This initiative reflects a shared commitment to protecting students, staff, and visitors, as cardiac arrest can happen to anyone - even young, healthy individuals.
