We Skated (& Hiked) 1,000 miles Across Florida - Florida Trail Thru Hike End

The final video from our 1,000 mile skate across Florida. We hiked through the woods and the swamps, and we skated the roads and bike paths. Would I recommend it? I am not sure, but in the end it was certainly an interesting trip! In the end we skated a total of 331 miles, and hiked 780 miles. The biggest thing I can say is that you want as light of a deck as possible, while still being large enough to be stable on it. Trucks don't matter beyond how light they are. Very nice bearings, ceramic if possible. Wheels you want 80 - 89a softness and 62mm or larger to roll over rough terrain I recommend these https://amzn.to/4jiDA8V The final sections of the Florida Trail are way down south in the swamps of the everglades. Passing through the Seminole Indian Reservation, and into Big Cypress National Preserve. This is the home of the Florida Panther, the large mountain lion that has taken to the swamp. The home of the anaconda, a snake which was released into the wild here and really took over as an invasive species. This is the home of wild and rare ochids which few will ever see. Big Cypress is the home of the final 30 miles of our thru skate, and it is known for being 30 miles of walking through swamp. Wading through water as deep as our crotch, for 30 miles straight. Little islands dot the land where you could take breaks or setup a tent. It's a scary section to be heading into for many Florida Trail thru hikers. You don't find terrain like this on the Appalachian Trail or Pacific Crest Trail. There is nowhere else in the United States with hiking like south florida. We are excited to finish. Both of us dealing with multiple injuries from the skateboards. My partner has a lot of back pain from having to carry the large 6lb item which cannot be packed easily. I have shin splints, and I think we're both ready for a big rest. Should you Skateboard the Florida Trail? The first hiker to thru skate the Florida Trail was Alex Fogt in 2018, and since his initial journey there have been a handful of others. As of 2025 in total roughly seven people have taken to skating instead of road walking. I would definitely say it is becoming a thing! A big motivator for me to do this trail a third time was to do it with a skateboard! Given that the trail has roughly 350 miles worth of roads, it sounds fun right? Get through the roads faster and in a more enjoyable way. Take the worst part of this trail and make it one of the best parts. With everything said and done I am not so sure that is the case, but we’ll get into that. In the end we skated a total of 331 miles, and hiked 780 miles.
