Adam Trenkamp, Lab Test Editor at Outside, and Adam Roy, Editor-in-Chief of Backpacker, test out ultralight backpacks to see how they handle heavy loads. Adam Trenkamp tests pack capacity in the lab, but isn’t able to define how the load actually feels when you’re hiking. The two try out the Durston Kakwa 55 and Outdoor Vitals CS40 with different loads to compare how the ultralight packs do when pushing their capacity limits. The packs were comfortable at the 80/20 point, where most weight is carried on the hips, but felt less comfortable as the load increased.
