About 30 miles north of Flagstaff, AZ, the Wupatki National Monument has four ~1000 year old pueblos to visit on a loop road that ends up at the Sunset Crater National Monument. Sunset Crater Volcano is the most recent of the San Francisco Volcanic Field volcanoes to erupt, about 1000 years ago (1085AD). The San Francisco Volcanic Field has more than 600 volcanoes that have been active for 6 million years, beginning with the collapse of the San Francisco Stratovolcano that created the San Francisco Peaks, which include Mt. Humphreys, the tallest mountain in Arizona. We take a walk through its lava field on The Lava Trail after visiting each of the Wupatki Nat'l Monument pueblos.
