Portland Reservoir - Portland, Connecticut Nestled deep in the woods of rural Portland, Connecticut, the Portland Reservoir is one of the state’s best kept secrets. Take the Reservoir Rim Trail loop for an easy walk around the water. About a half mile or a mile from the trailhead, depending on the direction you take, the path crosses over Buck Brook. Beaver dams are commonplace here, which can sometimes make it difficult to navigate. Numerous trails branch off from the main route that connect to Meshomasic State Forest, a 9,000 acre plot of protected land spanning parts of East Hampton, Portland, Marlborough, Glastonbury and Hebron.
