Watching The Nash Fire Start From Matthieu Lakes- On August 12, 2017 my friend Randi and I hiked southbound on the Pacific Crest Trail to South Matthieu Lake and then completed the loop on the Matthieu Lakes trail. We had done some trail magic that morning for the PCT thru hikers and were watching the Nash Fire erupt from the west side of the Three Sisters. From the east the Milli Fire had already been burning heavily for 24 hours, and by the evening the fires had gotten within a half mile of the Pacific Crest Trail and the forest service was evacuating hikers from the trail and the Matthieu Lakes area.
