📍Madison, Connecticut For my First Day Hike, I traveled to the beautiful shoreline town of Madison. Just off busy Route 80 on the Madison / Killingworth town line, a network of trails run alongside the Hammonasset River and Lake Hammonasset. There’s a small pull off next to a sign welcoming visitors to Madison. Cross the street to access the trails marked “Bailey Trail North.” I was drawn to this spot, however, for the bridge under the bridge. I discovered the spot from pictures in a Reddit post where people were talking about a similar spot in Norwalk. I walked along the narrow path next to the guard rails to reach a staircase leading under the Route 80 bridge. After I visited I learned that I was supposed to obtain a permit from the RWA to hike the trails along the Hammonasset. I was told that enforcement officers regularly patrol in the warmer months.
